A one-day workshop aimed to Increase participants’ awareness and ability in identifying and protecting children who are both at risk of and currently experiencing child exploitation.

To ensure that it is recognised that many young people (both boys & girls) are vulnerable or involved in exploitation, (including exchanging sex, abusive images, grooming & through new technology), and that workers can make a difference by understanding & recognising the issue, implementing local agreed pathways, local procedures, working together and responding appropriately.

Learning Outcomes

  • Examine the role that practitioner’s attitudes and beliefs play in identifying child sexual exploitation
  • Discuss the challenge of identifying boys who are being exploited and develop strategies to overcome those challenges
  • Describe and explain the process of child sexual exploitation and the variety of ways in which it can occur.
  • Be able to identify children/ young people at risk of CSE using “vulnerabilities” and “indicators” identified through best practice and research
  • Explain the link between “vulnerabilities” and children and young people’s understanding of their relationships with the adults who groom them.
  • Assess children / young people at risk using local / national risk assessment tools
  • Identify the children who are most at risk and use the local agreed pathways that are underpinned by the local policies and procedures to inform future actions. Emphasis on children who we look after.
  • State what interventions are appropriate for protecting children at risk and identify what services are available locally.
  • Use Government guidance, legislation and learning relevant to CSE to inform future work with young people, including Rotherham Report findings.
  • Explain sexual exploitation and Staffordshire SSCB’s sexually active young people policies and Inter-agency Safeguarding procedures.
  • Recognise the emotional component of CSE work and identify sources of support for the future
  • Have an awareness of local and national support agencies
  • To promote the importance of multi-agency working and cooperation.
  • Using Restorative Practice to understand the importance of the child’s voice and the ‘child’s world’. All children should be offered the opportunity to speak to a professional alone or have a suitable advocate to speak on their behalf (particularly for children who are not yet able to talk either because of their age or stage of development, because of a disability, or that English is their 2nd language) in order to gather their views and opinions.
  • To understand the SSCB Escalation Policy
