Detail:

In line with Staffordshire Safeguarding Children Board priorities and in conjunction with Stoke-on-Trent Safeguarding Children Partnership, we are planning a repeat Neglect and the Voice of the Child Conference targeted at all multi-agency children’s workforce working with the under 5s or in a supervisory role of front line staff working with the under 5's.   The Conference will also facilitate the launch of the Graded Care Profile 2 toolkit for assessing and identifying neglect.

Aim

  • To increase recognition and response to neglect and its impact on infants especially in the under 5s and non-verbal.
  • Using Restorative Practice to understand the importance of the child’s voice and the ‘child’s world’. All children should be offered the opportunity to speak to a professional alone or have a suitable advocate to speak on their behalf (particularly for children who are not yet able to talk either because of their age or stage of development, because of a disability, or that English is their 2nd language) in order to gather their views and opinions.
  • Understand and highlight the lessons learnt from national and local serious case reviews and child safeguarding practice reviews, including rapid reviews.
  • Launch and raise awareness of the Graded Care Profile 2 (GCP2) toolkit on licence from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Speakers:

  • Nicky Walker-Hall, Independent reviewer for child safeguarding practice reviews will be talking about creating situations where children feel comfortable and listening to and observing children’s reactions to inform assessments.
  • Alan Wood and Jenny Nicholson from the NSPCC will be delivering the national picture on neglect and the launch of the new Graded Care Profile 2 toolkit.
  • Dr Suzanne Smith Founder and Programme Director for ICON which addresses abusive head trauma in babies will be sharing her experience in the field.
  • And the National Child bureau will be speaking about the voice of the child, with advice, tools and techniques to help front line staff hear without words especially in the very young and non-verbal.
  • GCP2 Champions and practitioners will deliver the launch of GCP2 with training experience and case studies.
