This course is available for people working with children and families in Staffordshire. For those working with children and families outside of Staffordshire please contact your local Safeguarding Children Board.

Prerequisites

Participants must have undertaken Level 1 Child Protection training and Multi-agency Level 2 Working Together to Safeguard Children training before attending this course.

Target Staff

  • New lead responsibility for Safeguarding including Designated/Lead Officers, e.g. Designated teachers, managers responsible for child protection in early years setting., council child protection officers.
  • New to having operational responsibility for receiving concerns about the safety and welfare of children and young people, who make decisions about what action needs to be taken.
  • New to having strategic responsibilities in addition to the operational role.

Aims/objectives

  • Role of DSL and developing a robust safeguarding culture
  • Understanding policy, practice and procedures including the Threshold document
  • To understand your lead role in Early Help Assessment & Outcome Star, Graded Care Profile 2 toolkit, Child Criminal Exploitation risk factor matrix
  • Updates regarding current and emerging issues including learning from recent local reviews
  • Understanding of long-term neglect, domestic abuse and the impact this can have on children being neglected.
  • Making a referral
  • Expectations of a child protection conference
  • Professional challenge and escalation policy
